Sustainable Development

Our vision is to find a balance between a rich and diverse environment, a vibrant and inclusive society and a productive economy that enables us and future generations to enjoy a better quality of life. This typically covers:

  • Energy efficient construction for buildings
  • Diverse, restored landscape with open spaces for people to enjoy
  • New, long term economies with quality employment

Sustainable development themes

Imerys believes that we have a unique opportunity to achieve our vision in the clay area and see action across seven key themes as the way forward which will guide all that we do and help us build partnerships and trust.

Imerys believes that action in these seven areas will be the catalyst to delivering sustainable improvements across the china clay area.

1. Green infrastructure and landscape

Over the past decade Imerys has had outstanding successes re-creating biodiversity and improving landforms. Imerys will build on these achievements to create a new living landscape that re-connects people with a restored and vibrant countryside.

2. Climate change, energy and CO2

We aim to help meet the challenge of climate change by ensuring new homes meet the most demanding energy efficiency standards and by making a significant contribution to renewable energy production.

3. Sustainable economies

It is important that we put Cornwall at the forefront of market innovation and create new and worthwhile jobs. Our vision will focus on new environmental and innovative technologies, and help create and stimulate new economies and opportunities.

4. Sustainable communities and public benefits

This means enhancing communities and building on their sense of belonging and identity - homes and work that are close together; ready access to services and facilities; buildings that reflect and connect with their surroundings, and a place that creates a sense of well-being.

5. Prudent use of resources and the environment

Responsible and efficient use of the environment and its limited natural resources is important. This means Imerys will re-use previously disturbed land instead of greenfield sites; will be creative in using its clay waste and aggregates in new buildings; and will be innovative in seeking transport and access solutions.

6. Governance and community involvement

Local communities will have an important role to play and involvement and trust will be vital. This means Imerys will develop processes with partners and local communities to enable everyone to work together, become involved with and be a part of developing and delivering the future for the china clay area.

7. Good practice learning and dissemination

We intend that the regeneration will become an iconic symbol and leader in sustainability practice. This means that we will learn good practice from others and promote what we do well - now and in the future.
